In September 2018, Sonasid, ArcelorMittal's subsidiary and Morocco's largest long-steel producer awarded a contract to Danieli Centro Cranes for electrical and automation upgrade of the No.4 finished bar-mill crane at the Jorf Lasfar plant, El Jadida.

The engineering, procurement and delivery of the new electrical cabinets was completed in just three months and the old switchboards were replaced with electrical boards, with up-to-date frequency converters, heat dissipators and A/C units.

In addition to this, the latest anti-sway technology was implemented and tested, which allows full control of the load oscillation during operation and thus a significant efficiency increase in the handling process.

The complete installation time was optimized, limiting the production shut-down to five days per each crane.

This upgrade represents a typical equipment retrofit that can be easily replicated on all other cranes of the mill upstream, optimizing the maintenance cost, reducing the electrical spare parts stock and allowing a fast learning curve for operators and maintenance team.
